Everyone in the Greek community is familiar with Afroditi Bakery in Park Extension. It has been around since 1971, serving the Greek community and Montrealer’s alike, a plethora of delicious and fine Greek desserts this side of the Atlantic. Over the years you would be able to find some of their famous desserts like Baklava and Kourambiathes in some supermarkets like Mourelatos.

Last December, after so many years with only one location they decided to expand and open a second location on Sources Boulevard in the West Island. Thus, further adding to the continuation and increase of businesses that has hit the community in the last five months. Dollard, as it is known to us Westies, has a large Greek community east of Sources. I am sure like I, that they are happy that they don’t need to travel far any longer to obtain some of their favorite pastries.

I had the chance to visit this particular location on their opening day and a few times thereafter and I am blown away every time. The choices are amazing, but what is special about Afroditi Bakery is their set up. You can now enjoy a delicious pastry and good Greek coffee on site, amidst a newly renovated and modern locale. You will find two seating areas, two small tables in front that seats four and a long high table and stools that can seat 6 people. The décor is also visually appealing with modern rustic themes, wooden tables, chalkboards with their daily specials and a bright streamlined space.

While everyone is flocking to Starbucks and lining up for their lattes, we sat inside at one of the tables quietly enjoying some Diples-Traditional Christmas Pastry and a good Greek coffee. I love the place and now it has become my go to place for dessert and coffee in the West Island, a little special treat for myself. After so many years of fluffy piled high whipped cream pies and the generic chain coffee shops this is more than a welcome change, it was totally needed.

But Afroditi does not stop there, you can also get a quick lunch and many specialty items imported from Greece, like olive oil, balsamic vinegars and marinated vegetables. They also sell all types of bread as well as customized cakes made to just for you and plenty of delicious pastries. You can also find your milles feuilles and eclairs, but why stop there. The staff is very friendly and very accommodating and you can ask lots of questions. For a moment I felt like I had entered a modern pastry shop in Athens, until I remembered I was on this side of the Atlantic.
